Powder Coating in San Antonio, TX
Powder coating is a way of finishing metal parts that holds up better than ordinary paint to heat, sun, road grime and everyday knocks. At Grand Collision Center we powder coat wheels, bumpers, brackets, trim and other metal parts, in the color you choose. Whether you are refreshing a daily driver, finishing a restoration, or protecting parts that take a beating, we can talk through what you have and what you want it to look like.
What powder coating is
Instead of a liquid paint, powder coating uses a fine, dry powder made of pigment and resin. The powder is given an electrostatic charge so it clings evenly to a grounded metal part, including edges and corners that a spray gun can miss. The part then goes into an oven, where the powder melts, flows together and cures into a single hard layer. Because it is applied dry and baked on, the coat is usually thicker and more even than a typical liquid finish, and there are no runs or drips to sand out.
Parts we commonly coat
- Wheels and rims — the most popular job, whether you want to restore the original look or change the color completely.
- Bumpers — steel bumpers on trucks and older vehicles that see a lot of weather and road debris.
- Brackets and mounts — small structural pieces that are prone to surface rust.
- Trim and accent pieces — metal trim, grilles and other details you want to match or contrast with the body.
- Other metal parts — if it is metal and can handle the heat of curing, ask us whether it is a good candidate.
Powder coating is for metal. Plastic, rubber and many composite parts cannot go through the curing oven, so for those we will point you toward paint instead.
Our Powder Coating process
- Look and talk — We look over your parts, confirm they are suitable for powder coating, and talk through color and finish before giving you an estimate.
- Strip and clean — Old paint, coatings, rust and grease are removed so the powder bonds to clean bare metal. Most of the quality of a powder coat is decided at this step.
- Mask — Threads, mating surfaces and anything else that must stay uncoated are covered before the powder goes on.
- Apply — The charged powder is sprayed evenly over the part.
- Cure — The part is baked so the powder flows out into a smooth, hard finish.
- Inspect and return — We check the finish and let you know your parts are ready.
Powder coating or paint?
Powder coating is a good fit for parts that are removed from the vehicle and see hard use: wheels, bumpers, brackets and hardware. Body panels that stay on the car are usually painted and color-matched instead, which is the work our auto body and paint team does every day. If you are not sure which suits your project, ask — we will tell you honestly which one makes more sense.
